motivate employees

Think telling someone they’re doing great work on the job doesn’t make a difference? Research says otherwise. In an economy where money is tight, positive feedback can help keep employees motivated. In fact, according to a recent survey by Kelton Research nearly 50% of working Americans say they would rather be appreciated than have an opportunity to advance in their careers.

The study also found, with escalating workplace demands, employees aren’t feeling valued by executives and superiors. Nearly 70% of working Americans complain they haven’t received useful feedback from their supervisors in the last six months and over 80% haven’t established their career goals with their superiors.

employee recognition solutions

Half a lifetime ago, I was a receptionist. A reluctant one. I was, however, grateful to have a job at a small advertising agency in Beverly Hills where people brought donuts every day and the owners brought their schnauzer. And here’s the best part, looking back: despite the fact that they’d hired me to answer their phones, the nice folks at Klein/Richardson didn’t see me as a receptionist either. They sent me to night school ad classes to learn how to be a copywriter.

Not only that, they let me play along with the “real” creative teams as they developed ideas for a huge upcoming three-million dollar pitch. And then, they liked some of those ideas well enough to allow me present them to a room full of stunned Japanese gentlemen, after I’d hung up their coats, gotten coffee, and put the phones on auto-answer.

talent retention

Recognizing that you need to do something proactively is the first step in keeping talent retained and engaged. Be mindful that this isn’t a one-time fix – it’s more important than ever to keep lines of communication open between leaders and staff. As a leader, the key is to strengthen and build trust with your team, and that happens when you’re available, when you listen to them, and are open and honest about what’s happening in the organization.

Communication is job one – redouble your efforts. Taking the time to share news and ideas with staff will do wonders in reducing any anxiety that may be present. Help the team
understand why you’ve had to make some of the decisions that may have adversely affected them and your candor will go a long way in keeping them engaged. If you do have folks who’ve become disenchanted, talking it through is the quickest way to rebuild connections and trust.

Use these additional employee discussions to seek their ideas for generating revenue or
reducing costs – they’ll appreciate being asked and you may gain a new idea or two. Be open to other ideas as well…now might be a good time to consider flex-time, or even flex-place options to keep workers engaged and onboard.
