Gary Peterson Recognized by Manufacturing Industry for Continuous Improvement and Industry Leadership

SALT LAKE CITY—Nov. 16, 2015—O.C. Tanner, the global leader in helping organizations inspire and appreciate great work, today announced the induction of Gary Peterson, executive vice president of supply chain and production at O.C. Tanner, to the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) Hall of Fame.

The honor is in recognition of Peterson’s achievements in helping transform O.C. Tanner’s manufacturing operation from “batch” to lean, which began more than 20 years ago. Since that time, O.C. Tanner has witnessed incredible results, such as reducing its production lead time from 26 days to 20 minutes. Peterson is quick to attribute this success to the many employees who have driven adoption of and engaged with lean manufacturing principles for the long term. The result for O.C. Tanner clients are custom, one-of-a-kind products produced with the same efficiency as mass production.

“We congratulate Gary and his team for this notable recognition and for their great work in our manufacturing business,” said Dave Petersen, CEO of O.C. Tanner. “Our customers trust O.C. Tanner to deliver distinctive and unique employee recognition awards and Gary’s innovation in and commitment to sound manufacturing principles drives exceptional value for our customers.”

O.C. Tanner lean manufacturing principles include respect for every individual, leading with humility and seeking perfection. Additionally, several systems, such as coaching and training, have been developed to support those principles.

“The AME recognition is really due to the great work of all the good teams of people at O.C. Tanner,” said Peterson. “It’s always impressive to me that even though a process can change the outcome of a machine, the greatest satisfaction we get from the manufacturing principles is how the process changes people and teams.”

Peterson was inducted to the AME Hall of Fame during the annual AME Cincinnati 2015 Annual Conference, Oct. 19-23. The AME Hall of Fame recognizes industry thought leaders and influencers who support the values, principles and practices found within leading enterprise excellence organizations. Peterson has worked at O.C. Tanner for 28 years, primarily in manufacturing and supply chain, and is an executive advisory board member for the Shingo Institute. In 1999, O.C. Tanner also received the Shingo Prize for excellence in manufacturing.
