Workplace culture for most companies is in flux. Unless you put forth intentional effort to protect your culture, the impact of the pandemic threatens to weaken even the strongest cultures, according to Harvard Business Review (HBR).
The retail industry and its workforce were hit hard during the pandemic. About 1.1 million retail employees were unemployed as of June 2020 due to layoffs and furloughs. As retail operations re-opened, employee–and customer–safety became an even more important element of company culture. Organisations put in additional health and hygiene guidelines and efforts that added to retail employee’s workloads while they faced risk of infection at work.
Given the significant changes in the retail work environment, it’s not surprising that organisations experienced culture struggles, too. A SHRM study found two out of three companies reported keeping employee morale up to be difficult during the pandemic, and one-third said maintaining company culture was a challenge.
